There is a 30% wash-out rate for these dogs, and are placed as pets or ESA's for the disabled.

All SDFL school dogs have x-rays, and are checked several times by local vets to ensure they are medically fit for work.

Costs: About $300 to cover your take home equipment, crate, toys and starter food. Some clients have a better financial standing and pay more to help defer our cost. These dogs are valued at nearly $38,040 after their training.
Does SDFL "certify" dogs trained by other organizations or individuals?
A. Yes, but the Dog and Team must pass our very strict testing guidelines. Certification is not required but recommended.

These are our standardized training tests.

Pet-2-SD Program
Their is a dire shortage of trained dogs as training programs have limited funding, wait times can be months to years for a school dog. Some disabled call and ask if their young dog can be trained for them to be a service dog. SDFL is creating this program using local independent/private trainers to assist those that are interested in this route. It should be noted only 20% of pet dogs complete this program, and it's strongly discourraged as service dogs have the highest standards of conduct. However if your dog is one of the 20%, it will follow the same SDFL training guidelines and tests and at the end be certified the same as a school dog. This training method will attempt to wash-out non-conforming dogs as quickly as possible to reduce handler costs.

Costs: About $10-20/hour with an independant professional dog trainer (CPDT/IAABC/CGC). [These trainers are not employees of SDFL, they are local dog trainers, in your area, that have the skills to do the training, we simply provide the requirements.] The trainer will be provided the requirements of the certification tests.

Owner-Training Certification     OT FAQ
There are many disabled who have already trained their own pet to do tasks for them. Many just need further guidance, training and testing to complete their service dog. We offer this program to the select few that have training records (hours) and can pass our standardized tests. The dog must be at least 1 year old with at least 6 months of documented training. This method is best when the handler has a dog training background or assistance from others the training field. This method has a 40% wash-out rate.

Costs: About $200 to take the certification test, but only when your dog is ready. [SDFL does not provide x-rays or a medical certification, just behaviour and skill/task.]

None of these routes are fast and will take months to a year to complete. Service Dogs have the highest demands, unlike agility events where the dog must perform 100% for only 10 minutes, a service dog must perform 100% for up to 8 hours. Service Dogs are on par with the best agility dogs in the world and will follow command even when they don't feel like it. It should also be remembered that a service dog is entrusted with the life of the handler, a dog could easily kill their handler by bolting in to traffic, ignoring commands or not alerting.
